Furthermore, in this beautiful town, Madre María de San José was born. (1875-1867) She is the first saint of Venezuela. She founded the Agustinas order to the service of the poor. She was declared a saint by his holiness the pope, Juan Paul II on the 7th of May, 1995, at the Basilica of St. Peter, Rome Nowadays, her natal house can be visited in Choroní, it is open to the public and you would be shown around by one of the Agustinas sisters. This coastal town of the Aragua State is only 50 kilometers from Maracay; it is framed by the Henri Pitier National Park. The National Park is located in the Central Coastal Region of Venezuela between the states of Aragua and Crabobo. It was the first National Park established in Venezuela on February 13th, 1937 under the name of Rancho Grande, but in 1953 was changed to Henry Pitier as an honor to the famous naturalist. It measures 107,800 hectares from the Caribbean coast to the south of the mountain range. It has an amazing diversity of flora from the gramineas and bushes in the lowest areas to the high lands of the rain forest. It also has a great variety of fauna, with some 520 species of birds; and mammals such as: tapirs, ocelots, pumas, monkeys, etc. |
